I haven't pieced this story together much so far. Here's what I have. I think it'll be 3rd-person narration.
The main character is a 13-year-old girl named Naomi Joyce. I don't know much about her, other than that she's a total Earth, she lost her older brother because of a fire in her home when she was young--4, I think. She's been assigned Luisa (last name undetermined) as a book buddy at school. Nothing fancy--the first and eighth grades meet once a week to read books together. Luisa immigrated with her father from Mexico two years ago, and they live in a tiny apartment together near the school. Recently Naomi (pronounced ni-O-may, not nay-O-mee, and yes it makes a difference and no she's not Mexican) has been having flashbacks about the fire. All she knows is that it was an arson fire, that a fireman carried her out and that her brother never made it. The police never cracked the case. Naomi has a photographic memory, which she uses to her advantage, but her mind has always seemed to block out everything around that fire. No images, no memories. However, as she starts getting flashbacks, she is forced to piece together what she knows to find out what really happened.
Anyway, Naomi spends time with Luisa, and gets to care about her like a little sister. Naomi buys her ice cream, takes her to the park, helps her with her homework. They spend more time together than they do apart. Luisa adores Naomi. Luisa, on her part, is young but very introspective--one of the most reflective characters. Naomi also worries about her constantly--Luisa has severe asthma and breathing problems. Sometimes she'll be gone from school for weeks. One day at school, they're just having book buddies, the normal routine. Luisa heads to the next floor to use the bathroom. The fire alarm goes off, and the principal's voice comes over the intercom. Running as fast as she can, Naomi gets Luisa out of the building alive, but Luisa is barely breathing. Her father can't afford hospital care, and their apartment was also destroyed in the fire. While her father lives on the streets, Luisa comes to live with Naomi.
At this point in the story, Luisa is barely clinging to life. On one night when her breathing is really bad, Naomi wakes up to see the daughter of Death standing at the end of Luisa's bed, ready to kill her.
Luisa lives through that night, and Naomi develops a close friendship with Death's daughter, who is in fact in trial to prove herself to her father. Naomi must choose between her life and Luisa's, at an enormous price, and must fill in the blanks of the night when the fire broke out at her home...and why it happened at school, at the moment when Luisa was farthest from the door. It isn't too developed yet.
Should I keep going with this, or is it rather pointless?
